So what can people like Ed do to attract bigger name racers to ICUP races?

He would have to start offering prize-money, for one, and fairly large amounts of it ... which means sponsorship and higher entry fees.

It's a vicious cycle.

Actually I hope the NMBS Series in it's current form does go away. MTB racing is not dying, look at Ed's series, look at endurance racing, etc. People are racing, they just are not doing at the bloated NMBS races. The idiots who run the NMBS don't care about the sport or the racers they care about making a profit, which they are not very good at, they are too stupid to figure out what racers want. (who wants to do laps in a burnt up field in Fontana?) The current NMBS Series is a mockery of what the NORBA Series once was. The longer it stays around the longer it spoils the memory of something that was once great.

Good for you Bob. Way to carry the torch for the local MTB community! Art, I agree with you about the outrageous cost to race in a dying event. But,I think you would agree that it would be sad to see the NMBS fade into oblivian. Lots of grass roots races are popping up again(like they used to) in an effort to breathe life back into the racing scene. Glad I was around to see the sport in it's prime. Remember the DV race when the young punk Travis Brown was trying to run down Tomac up until the final DH, when Tomac buried him on the final descent only to crash on the last turn, get up and sprint for the win? To date, the best MTB race I've ever scene.

You are bitter :)

But the NMBS is dead, I predict this is the last year, the current promoters inherited a corpse. Can't blame them for all of it. I'll race, cause occasionally it is nice to race against new people, even though I can't snowboard there, they have some nice trails and pay a few friends a living wage, so, I'll race.

But I'm dumb,

Well put. It banes me to see how far MTB racing has slumped. And lets say you won your race, would you even win back the cost of the race? Is NMBS even paying the pros? Bob(stupidbike) can go ahead and call me a bitter man but I am calling the kettle black. I know you have been around long enough to see what racing use to be like in the early and mid 90s and what it is today. When I raced semi pro back in the day I think this race had over 100 racers in each of the expert classes, semi pro class and pro class. I wonder if there will even be 100 racers total in all the expert classes? Besides screw Deer Valley! Maybe we should ride or flyfish this weekend instead!

Nothing like paying to have friends. Go join a fraternaty while you're at it. On a liner note, I scored a spot at IMBA's world summit last week. And yea verily, the riding was less than stellar, but at least there was PLENTY of it. Time to get the ball rolling here in rock bottom. Hasta, tc

Don't forget all the money that won't go in your gas tank. That's the No. 1 thing keeping me away from distant races these days.
