Wake Up, Kick Ass, Repeat

40 is the new 30

Blog Category: Blog — Blogged by: Art on May 21, 2006 at 6:14 am

I raced the Bear Lake Classic yesterday, 104 miles of wind and rollers. This was my first race with my new team FFKR/SBO and I was not sure what to expect. I new we had a lot of strength but since I have not raced with them yet I was unsure what the team dynamic would be. Our plan was to have some one in every move and when they get in a move don’t block. That is just low class. Right off the bat Norm Bryner goes up the road and K-Rad is on him. It was a great move because it did not have a PCCA or Logan Race club (the two largest teams) rider in it, meaning they would have to chase and we could sit back and wait for the counter. Actually it meant that PCCA would have to chase as LRC does not do that. So the front of the race has yellow guys riding tempo keeping the gap manageable. K-Rad and Norm eventually get caught and another attack gets clear with another FFKR rider in it (Travis I think?) We make the turn around the lake and we are doing 40mph with a sweet tailwind. This is where it gets funny. We are doing 35-40mph and guys are attacking! Good idea, I am sure you can ride 45mph and stay away. The break kind of falls apart at the feed zone and soon another is gone with K-Rad again. They get caught and then the move of the day goes, 7 guys go up the road including our Jeff Sargeant, Aaron Jordan(AJ), Todd Hageman, Mark Yap, and Todd Posselli. In other words some pretty good horse power. They dangle about a minute off the front for a long time which is strange because we are not going that hard. They must not be very organized up front. On the back side of the lake going into a head wind I make my move and take Kirk Eck from LRC with me. We were stuck in no mans land for what seemed like forever. I almost sat up since I was getting almost no help. I decided to give it one last push and Kirk agreed to help. We catch the break and I go straight to the front and drive it. I ease up and no one pulls through. WTF? Sarge tells me to save my strength as there are a lot of passengers in the break. I am thinking OK all the big teams are here so the peleton wont have a lot of chasers. We (FFKR) have 2 guys and LRC have 2 guys so at the very least there should be 4 guys ready to work. AJ tells me he is out of water and blown which I believe because he is always a huge motor in the break and has too much pride to sit on. The LRC guys? They have a strict no work policy so no luck there. I can see there are a lot of tired faces and empty water bottles so it is going to be tough. The rest of the guys would pull through when they could but it was a long hot ride with only one feed zone. In about a 3 mile stretch our gap went from 2 to 1 minute. We were almost to the turn into the crosswind section. I knew this group would not last. We make the turn into the crosswind and whoever is in the front puts it in the gutter. Does not accelerate, just puts it in the gutter. Anyway we are going ridiculously slow, so I went for it. Hageman goes with me and we trade some big pulls. Mark Yap (LRC) comes across it is game on. We make it to the tailwind section and I knew the final selection had been made. Hageman and I knew that since the only time Mark had been in the wind all day was when he bridged up to us he would have the freshest legs for the sprint. My legs were cramping so bad I had serious doubts about finishing. We attacked him a few times but he was just too fresh. This one is coming down to a sprint. Hageman leads it out and I get boxed in for just a moment. I am coming around Mark but the line is coming even faster. I threw my bike but he got me. Damn I wish I could sprint. Sarge got 4th so we made some nice $$$ for the team. Today my team was unreal, we were in every move and all the guys rode their hearts out. Sorry I could not close the deal guys. I am really proud to ride with these guys. Being a mountain biker at heart I still have a hard time with the sit on, don’t power the break, then sprint tactic. That is just me. I want to race to win or die trying. Maybe I would win more if I did not race that way but I know if I raced that way and did not win I would feel like a chump. Is it sour grapes on my part because I did not win? Probably. But this is my blog and I can write what I want. I like every single guy on LRC, great group of guys. I congratulate Mark on the win. I think we will just have to agree to disagree on tactics. I hope my good form continues and I look forward to many more battles with you guys.

Looks like I got shined for our ride today so I am out for some easy recovery miles solo. Glad my iPod is charged.

Art,
Great ride! Its not only you, I believe there is a right way to win. And its not sour grapes, its called racing your bike. You would feel like a chump if you sat on a won as well. Marc sat on for 40 miles and soft pedaled when he did pulled through, which was only about 6 times and for about 3 seconds. He was fresh as a daisy. I don’t get it. Can someone explain to me why the strongest team in the state needs to resort to not working in the break, nor working in the field. The guy in the break says “I have a guy coming up (for 30 miles??). And when we can see the field no one is off the front. And I was told the boys in green did nothing in the field, because they had a guy in the break. Finally, you bridge up with a Eck and now there are two of them sitting on the break. Unreal.
You don’t want to race that way. I would take our second and third to that win anyday. Its called pride and honor.
Like Dave Spade says “There I said it”
Great job, man!

Don’t worry I can’t race that way. I am just not wired like that. I am glad you are teaching your team the right way to race. You and your guys rode a great race Saturday. Congrats

I agree, rip every ones legs off, attack the crap out of them,be in every break, work when you SHOULD.
I call it pride,I guess some can sit and win and still be proud?

Hey, at least you didn’t pull a Bettini and raise your arms in victory as you rolled in 2nd.

Congrats on the great result!

No, we don’t chase two man breaks that have no chance with 80 miles to go.
Re: Marc’s tactics… take it up with me. We are there to win the race, not to prove how strong we are.

Same here. Not personal. But…
What do you think the reports would be if Valverde sat on the break during Liege Bastogne Liege when he was in the break with Basso, Bettini, Horner, DiLuca, etc? Would he be treated as a hero for winning? Don’t think so.
Especially if he had a Caisse d’Epargne teammate with him in the break that didn’t work either.
The newspapers would have eaten them for breakfast.
See you guys in a few weeks when we get back from Mt. Hood.

Todd- Point taken, but Marc is not the “Valverde” of our team. We are successful because our guys are willing to work for whoever is going the best.
Good luck ‘In tha (Mt.) Hood. Hope no one sits on ya. J/K.

No but he and Kirk were the only other Cat.1’s in the break. The rest of the break were cat.2’s and some brand spanking new Cat. 2’s at that. I would think two Cat. 1’s wouldn’t have to worry about a break of Cat.2’s. And if you were worried about me, you had me outnumbered 2 to 1.
Sorry. I’m done. I just want Utah racing to be the best around and if all the teams duplicated your teams tactics, racing would suck. That is why I outed the Specialized boys for not working at Antelope. It was silly for them to sit in the field, while Chris P. drove a break with you and Nate in it. Now that was a situation where someone should have sat on the break. If you didn’t like the odds of the break, you have enough guys to bring it back and send more up the road. Thats all I’m saying.
Nothing personal. I just want to see great racing in Utah and I’m not always seeing it.
And if we ever exhibit crap tactics I expect you guys to jump all over me. Which is fine, because if we did, we deserve it. We screwed up big time at Antelope and paid for it. And actually my team should have brought the break back when Eck got across. But they assumed I had good legs which I have had lately, which wasn’t exactly the case.

Is this anything like at San Pete last year when you sat on the break for over 30 miles?? I noticed that your “pride” and “honor” still allowed you to sprint past many of your breakmates.

bottom line:
I think what Art is trying to get across is that there is the gentleman’s honor or competitive code that one should live and race by, especially in the U.S.. mano E mano. Does this concept work in competition….or war for that matter? Have we not battled against a greater evil (LRC) or competition and won? I give you David and Goliath. The young American colonies versus the ugly Great Britain warlord. Ike and Tina Turner. Does smart outweigh strength? And where does “talent” fit into the equation? The 40 year old Art chooses to race by the code, lets work together… may the best man win in the end. Others choose to race or compete by STRATEGY or “smarts”. I’ve never been blessed with “those” but I know the French had “those.” They were smart enough to know they were pussies and couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag. So, what did they do? They begged the americans(twice) to kick some German ass. What did we get, a silly statue. and more over, the German can’t march in the shade of the Chumps elysee. Thanks bitches! No one wants to race like french do they? So what did they do?…they started cheating. Tell me, who has the most suspended riders by country for doping? Guess? I’ll wait. Who would you want your child idolizing if he or she decide to race competitivlty? Lance or… Anquetil, who rode Alp d”huez once without the use of amphetimines and said “never again” So, it is my belief that the LOGAN RACE CLUB is all on dope! They are cheaters like the french! test them all and you’ll see. Check their prostates while you’re at it(cancer is very serious). Look at all the acolades Art has been given for his efforts in the race. We love Art as a friend and as a competitor, but most of all, he’ll give it everything… like an American…an oil hungry American!

RB:
If you remember correctly. At Sanpete, Al Butler, Flynn and I got in a break at mile 1. We were away for 40 miles. And yes, Al pulled with all his might even though we was outnumbered. You came up with a group. Burke quickly countered. I got on Burke and was away for another 30 miles. So already I was in two breaks for 70 miles, while you sat in the field. So yes, when you guys caught on to me and Burke I sat on a bit and tried to recover. You guys almost dropped me several times. I finally felt a bit better at the end.
Get your facts straight. I was in a break for 98 miles that day and I went pull for pull with only 1 or 2 other riders for 70 of those miles.
What else you got?

Luscious that is some funny shit. “Never been blessed with “those”" WOW. I wish that kind of humor came out of my fingers. Oh, and by the way, I think Marc did the right thing. Winning is the reason we race, isn’t it? He sits on and 40 year old Art almost beat him anyway. Oh well, there is always another race, right? And Todd, third ain’t so bad, is it? See ya soon, TMac

How is it that the facts are never truthfully given. On the first lap there were three riders riding tempo along the East side, two PCCA and one LRC, me. We obviously weren’t as worried about two solo riders with 70 miles to go, or we would have done more. Once the break was established and Art and I had joined I saw the front many times, probably just as many as you Todd. And since when does your category reflect your current fitness? Marc has been at Sea Level for the last 4 months and up until Saturday my longest ride was 3 hours. At the moment I am sure there are plenty of Cat 4’s that could take me to the shed. And in case you had forgotten, it was me who had been at the front for well over a mile when the attacks started that resulted in Art and Todd making the final move. If you want to whine after every race, have at it, but at least give a fair representation of what happenned.

so this is all very interesting. i’m glad that Todd is so aware of what all the teams are going through during races. the “outing” that Todd gave us Specialized boys for not chasing when we had 2 guys crashed and AJ and i not having the best day on the bike sure was relevant. i was really motivated to help them chase when for lap after lap they made solo attacks that would gain 5 seconds and then blow and then when they finally got all their guys at the front one of them would stay on the front and blow before a teammate would pull through. at Bear Lake it was quite the opposite…the PCCA boys were rolling it smooth and working great as a team…so again, nothing personal. as far as winning goes, yes, we are all there to win. everyone has their own opinion of how to race and what are the best race tactics. Yappers won on saturday and while the LRC race tactics are not liked by some, he won and i think they had quite a few of their riders finishing well. there are many times i wish that some other teams would help me out. i could sit and criticize the FFKR and the LRC guys for not coming up to the front in the tailwind on saturday when we were getting close to the finish and to the guys in the breakaway. the group i was in was less than 90 seconds back from Marc at the finish line. both teams still had plenty of guys in the group i was in and they could have increased their chances of a win by helping me chase. maybe FFKR and the remaining LRC guys could have rolled through with me and we could have caught some of the other competitors finishing 4th through 12th. instead K-rad and Nate attacked after i had driven it for a long ways and that really screwed me up…oh, wait a minute, they want to get the best placing possible and they looked up the road and saw AJ not in the break anymore and it was up to me to do what i could to get closer. AJ and i played it the best we could. AJ made the move, but ran out of water and by the time i realized it there was not much i could do. bummer for us. props to the LRC guys for getting it done. big props to the A-train! you’re riding great and you’ll light it up this weekend for the TGPC.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen Art on form. Nice job Saturday. Bridging, then driving the group, making the break and almost winning the race, very impressive. With you and Jeff and the rest of your squad riding well, it’s going to be a fun season. Yeah, I was bummed that Yap sat on - but that’s racing. And yes, I was blown. I ended up soloing in, citizen racers pacing me like I was standing still. One of the benefits of racing bikes with the big boys, it keeps the ego in check. Nice job again, Art.
