You Can’t Quit You Are Fired!

Blog Category: Blog — Blogged by: Art on December 10, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Dear Vino,
Please take you doped up blood to Asspakistahn or where every it was your parents did such a bad job raising you, and shut the fuck up! No one wants to hear from you any more, we quit you and all the other dopers like you a long time ago. I am sure you can buy many goats with the money you stole as a drug cheat and live like a king shit. Hopefully all the other cheaters that are flocking to ASStana will get caught this season and you can all meet up for a giant goat screw.

Still Racing, Still Learning

Yesterday’s race was a mixed bag for me. I for the most part am happy with my race. Legs were good but I made a rookie mistake that ended up costing me a lot. When it is that wet wearing anything on your legs is about the worst thing you can do. Your tights get soaked and then hold all that cold water right up against your skin. This ends up making you colder than a well diggers ass. The key is to apply a heated balm and then seal it in with a waterproof grease. Nothing fancy, vaseline works just fine. Anyway I went to my race bag after my warm up on the trainer and the leg grease was not there. Damn, guess I am wearing leg warmers. So I got a good start an after half a lap my drivetrain was already starting to skip but mt tires were hooking up great so I stuck with it. After a few laps my drivetrain was really slowing me and Rico was breathing down my neck so I switched bikes. My bike change was pretty slow and Rico got a good gap I had some work to do now. My 2nd bike had DrX’s tubulars on it and damn they were sweet. I didn’t start with them because last week in the snow my narrow clinchers were rocking and the did well yesterday too but the tubbies were the bomb yesterday. Another lesson learned. The other thing I learned it that 10 speed is pretty much useless in the slop, like I said 1/2 a lap and 10 speed was already having problems. My 2nd bike is 9 speed and I rode the majority of the race on it with no problems. So don’t believe the hype 10 speed sucks for cross. Anyway once I switched bike my lap times started to drop. I caught Rico who had caught Gallagher and Bart. Rico went down right after the barriers and I got on Barts wheel. By this time I had pitched my glasses which made following anyone a blinding proposition so I went around Bart and then Gallagher. Pretty soon after that Bart found the watts he had been missing and passed me. I tried to go with him but my legs were now numb and my calves were starting to cramp from the cold tights. Going into the last lap I still had a good gap on Gallagher and Rico but my legs were really starting to have problems. Coming into the last set of barriers I step off and both calves cramped like I have never cramped before and I went down like Rosie O’Donnell on a free buffet. I jumped up and tried to get going when I noticed I had broken my shifter, my seat was turned at a 45 degree angle. I rode for a ways as best I could my chain was now jumping all over the place (bent derailleur hanger I would later find out). Since I now effectively had no seat I had to stand but my legs were completely locked now so I got off and tried to run. That did not work either so I ended up walking the last K and could only watch as my placing dropped like Mitt Romney’s presidential hopes. So, another race and more lessons learned. You would think I would have this stuff figured out by now huh? That is the beauty of cross though, every race is different and you never stop learning. The Sport of Kings for sure.

Rachel once again threw down in the womens B race and got the win. Right after the B race she lined up with the big girls in the womens A field where she got a strong 5th place. Last night we were talking about the race and she was telling me that she felt pretty comfortable in the slop. She told me that she just left the bike slide around until the tires hooked up. Damn, sounds like the tri-geek may be a cross-geek after all.

I talked to The Rammstein Rider after her race today. Yeah she has cross fever bad. She had the biggest grin on her face you have ever seen and told me that cross is the greatest thing she has ever discovered! Yup, I know the feeling. Rock on girl.

It is no secret to anyone that knows me or reads this blog that I work for idiots. I know most people probably think they are smarter than their boss and if you work where I do then it is absolutely true. Let me illustrate.

We are having an overtime contest. Since it is illegal to force us work overtime the pinheads that run this dog and pony show have to tax their puny brains trying to come up with incentive for us to spend more than 40 hours a week here. Here is the latest:

- Earn a $25 gift certifivate for evey 10 hours overtime worked until the end of the year.

- Supervisor with the most overtime per person wins an iPod.

This is what they distributed to the us today on purple paper with snowflakes at the top. (yet we have a dress code to promote a professional work environment) SO we the peons who have to work holidays as it is, in exchange for working even more get a crappy $25 gift certificate while the supervisor that does not work holidays and seldom works even 40 hours gets a $300 iPod for exploiting his team the best. Assuming my math is correct (it is) I can work 120 hours of OT between now and Jan 1 and buy myself an iPod with the gift certificates I would earn and buy doing so my manager would also no doubt win an iPod for doing nothing. YA! Every one wins! I was actually planning on working some OT as my wallet is a little light but fuck it I would rather sell a bike or a kidney on EBay to get some cash. I will not be working a single second of overtime. Douche bags.

December 14 is D-Day for me. It is the the only chance for me to salvage a result for my ‘07 race season. At this point I have all the fitness I am going to have. The gun is loaded and in 11 days I will see if it is caliber is large enough to do any damage. The next 11 days are about keeping the legs fresh and the mind filled with positive images and affirmations.

Musically I will indulge a steady diet of metal, all metal all the time! Lamb of God, Slayer, Manowar, Gojira, Goatwhore, some old school Iron Maiden, SOD, etc, yeah it’s gonna be like that. Rachel will have me eating like a champ and keep the legs supple. Rob and the crew at Spin Cyle will have my bike in pro condition. Nobody wins alone and that is one reason this season has been so frustrating for me. I have a great support group behind me and I want to do something special to prove their faith in me is warranted.

Finally got our forst snow in the 801 yesterday. Perfect timing for the big cyclocross race and Gary Wheeler Farm. I got there early to watch Rachel race and to be honest I was a little worried for her. Being a tri geek her skills are a little suspect and I thought the snow might give her some troubles. On the first lap she came through well off the leaders pace but still smiling. So far so good. Somewhere on the 2nd lap she decided the snow was no problem and really turned up the heat. She had caught the leader and they were putting big time into the rest of the field. By the end of the 3rd lap she had a nice gap on second and it looked like she would win barring any problems. Going into the last 1/2 lap the girl in second had taken a lot of time out of her and it looked like she might catch her. Nothing doing though in her 3rd every cross race on a borrowed bike she had won. I guess I can’t make fun of her tri geek skills anymore. Turns out on the last lap she was having some problems with her hat falling down over her eyes. So yeah she ripped it blindfolded. Before the race I tld er in these conditions it is a matter of just dealing with problems, pick a gear you like because you probably wont be able to shift, and you will probably crash. Just deal. Well she certainly did that, so proud of her. Turns out I would need to follow my own advice later.

By the time we got on the course it was a lot like riding on a skating rink with ruts. You were fine as long as both wheels stayed in the same rut other wise down you went. A few years ago at a race at the RMR it started to rain with 2 to go. Turbo (who made it out today despite a bad case of the government flu) made a sweet move with one to go on the drag strip and someone at the front went down and literally the entire filed went down behind him. It was so slick I was able to pick up my brand new bike that I was racing for the first time and hold it over my head until I came to a stop. The course today was a lot like that. Once again I lined up in back due to my lack of points and once again my hope of being near the front was over before the end of the first lap. It was single file and all I could do was wait for people to crash and oh boy did they crash! After the 1st lap and 2 crashes, I was pretty much out of the traffic and started to work my way into the race again. My crashing was far from over though, not by a long shot. I think I only had 2-3 crash free laps. I inherited 4th place when Rico flatted. With 3 to go I got a glimpse of Reed Wycoff on the back stretch and thought I might be able to bring him back. I went down super hard though on the right hander leaving the single track before the little hill. My shoulder is still feeling it today, ouch. Anyway I am happy I was able to stay in the race mentally for the entire hour and I ended up in 4th. Todays race had little to do with fitness and everything to do with staying focused. Doesn’t matter how fit you are if your head is not in the game. Today was kind of a breakthrough for me because frankly my head has not been in the game lately. I need to go into Nationals with a lot of confidence and today helped a lot.
