Blast from the Past
So The Wolfe sends me an IM today asking me if I remember John Pecorelli. Hell yeah I do. He wrote a column for the school paper when I was in college. Every week he would rant about music, current events, hippies, etc. It was easily the best thing about that rag and he really pushed the envelope. I was amazed at the stuff they would print. I think he eventually got fired about something he wrote but I really don’t remember. So anyway he was always raving about this band called The Scientists. Finally I found one of their CD’s at Greywhale and oh man! Pecorelli’s reputation (in my mind anyway) as a man of unquestionable musical taste and vision was permanently secured and the genius of Kim Salmon was revealed to me that day. From the Scientists I got into The Beasts of Bourbon (as well as Tex Perkins and his assorted projects) and eventually Kim Salmon and The Surrealists(KSaTS). One of the best shows I ever got to see was KSaTS in Salt Lake City. Me and about 6 other people. My pal The Tone Man (another Kim Salmon freak) went and even got to talk to the man himself. He was amazed that anyone had ever heard of him. It is a shame that bands like Nickelback and Linkin Park sell out arenas and great talents like Kim Salmon are stuck touring in a crappy van playing pool halls. That is another topic entirely. I have never met Pecorelli but the dude has made a positive impact on me for which I will always be grateful. So anway it turns out Pecorelli has a site and is just as opinionated and angry as he was in the 80’s. Check it out.
